How old do you have to be to drive in the UAE?

To apply for your driving license in the UAE you have to be over the age of 18 and a resident.

How to apply for a UAE driving license

If you have an existing driving license from a foreign country, then you can transfer your driving license, but only if it’s on the eligible list of countries. If your country is not listed, or you don’t have an existing license, then you will need to undergo training.

How to transfer your existing driving license into a UAE driving license

To transfer your existing driving license into a UAE license you will need to visit the Drivers License Department within your Emirate and bring with you the following;

• A driving license (original and a copy) from one of the eligible countries
• Your passport (original and copy)
• 1 passport photo
• An eye test certificate
• 360 dirhams in cash to pay for a transfer fee and to open a driving file
• A no objection letter from your sponsor

Depending upon which country you are transferring your license from, you may also need;

• a consulate letter
• a translation of your driving license

What countries are eligible for a UAE driving license transfer?

Note: Translations or consulate letters may be required from some countries. These include Canada, Cyprus, Greece, Japan, Poland, and South Korea.

Where you transfer your driving license in the UAE usually depends upon which emirate you are a resident of. For example if you are resident of Sharjah, you’ll have to get your drivers license transferred in Sharjah. Below are the locations of the drivers license departments for each Emirate.
