Union Insurance Car Insurance FAQs

What does GAP insurance cover?

GAP insurance stands for Guaranteed Asset Protection and it protects you when your standard insurance payout (or ‘total loss payment’) does not cover the full value of your car. GAP is really for motorists who have just bought a brand new car, because a great deal of the value of a new car shrinks within the first few months or during first year that you own it. This means that if your car is stolen or written off soon after you have bought it, GAP insurance will make sure you get the full value of your car rather than just, say, 60% that you would get from ‘total loss payment’.

Where do I find the ‘Vehicle information’ that is required to buy car insurance?

You will find the ‘vehicle information’ on your car registration card (Mulkiya).

What is the minimum length of car insurance I can buy?

You have to buy coverage for a 13-month period according to the UAE Traffic Department (the Roads and Transport Authority and the Emirates Vehicle Gate). This insures you get a one-month ‘grace’ period after a year’s cover.

I have third-party insurance, can I upgrade to one of the Union Insurance Comprehensive plans?

You can upgrade from third-party insurance to a comprehensive plan as long as your car is GCC standard and supported by a Comprehensive Test Certificate. All subject to approval of course.

I can’t remember when I need to renew my insurance policy. What do I do?

Your insurance policy document and car registration card (Mulkiya) should have details of your policy renewal date. In any case, we will send you reminders by SMS, plus an email near to the renewal date.
