The second smallest of the United Arab Emirates in terms of land mass (after Ajman) and the smallest in terms population, Umm Al Quwain is possibly the most humble of the emirates. However, this does not mean that the motorists of Umm Al Quwain do not love their cars, and fast ones in particular.
In the summer of 2020 Umm Al Quwain Police announced that they had installed 14 speed cameras on the roads to stop motorists repeatedly breaking speed limits in the emirate. The Traffic and Patrols department of the Ministry of the Interior said that there were 8,730,264 speeding violations in 2019, although this was down by 166,441 from the year before.
Motorists caught speeding faster than 80km/h in the emirate face a fine of Dh 3,000, and 23 black points on their record, as well as the possibility of their car being impounded. The previous year one driver was caught travelling at 225 km/h (almost 140 mph) on Sheikh Zayed Road. His vehicle was immediately confiscated.
