How much excess could you pay on your car insurance?

Your excess is what you pay towards a claim. For a private car with up to 9 passengers, the most is AED 350 to AED 1,400 per accident, depending on the car's value. An extra percentage of up to 20% can apply. Your insurer can confirm your figure.

Updated 4 min read

The unified policy is the standard wording UAE insurers must use.1 It calls your excess a deductible and sets it per accident.2

Every amount below is a maximum, not the amount you will pay.

Your insurer can confirm the figure on your policy. The bars under when you pay it show how an excess splits a repair bill, with made-up amounts.

What is the most your excess can be?

For a private car with up to 9 passengers, the most is AED 350 to AED 1,400 per accident, depending on the car’s value. Other vehicles have higher limits, up to AED 4,500.2

Fig. 1.The maximum excess runs from AED 350 to AED 4,500 per accident

When do you have to pay it?

Your insurer can charge the excess for an accident caused by you or by someone you allowed to drive. It can also charge it for cases “deemed committed by an unknown person”. The policy describes it as an amount deducted from the compensation due.2

ILLUSTRATION. Fictional AED amounts, not market prices.Excess in both scenarios: AED 1,000. Assumes the claim is accepted.

Larger repairAED 6,000

You pay AED 1,000Insurer pays AED 5,000

The bill is above the excess. You pay the excess and the insurer pays the rest.

Minor repairAED 700

You pay AED 700Insurer pays AED 0

The bill is below the excess. You pay all of it.

The policy does not say you pay the excess on every claim. It does not define “unknown person”, so ask your insurer whether that means hit and run only.

If you injure someone else, they pay no excess on their compensation. The Third Party policy does not allow it.3

Could you pay more than the table shows?

Yes. If you caused the accident, your insurer can add a percentage of the compensation on top, up to 20%.2

Table 2.Extra excess, as a maximum percentage of the compensation.
If this appliesMost it can add
Driver under 2510%
Taxi and public transport vehicles10%
Sports cars and modified vehicles15%
Vehicles modified outside the factory20%
Rental vehicles20%

If more than one line applies, only the highest percentage counts. On a total loss, the percentages do not apply.2 The policy does not say whether the amount in Table 1 still applies on a total loss, so ask your insurer.

Here is how the two limits add up, with made-up amounts.

Table 3.Example with made-up amounts. Not a market price and not a quote.

Maximum extra for a driver under 25, at 10%AED 1,000
Largest excess the two lines allowAED 2,000

The example assumes both maximums apply and takes 10% of the full compensation. The policy does not say whether the percentage comes before or after the Table 1 amount.

Does your car count as a sports car?

Ask your insurer. The 15% line names “sports cars and modified vehicles”, but the policy defines neither term and does not say who decides.2

Do you pay excess on a windscreen claim?

It depends on your plan. The unified policy does not mention windscreens.2 Some insurers list a waiver.

  • GIG Gulf lists a waiver of the excess for windscreen damage on Prestige, and below AED 5,000 on Perfect. It lists no waiver on Third Party.4
  • Sukoon lists Windscreen Damage (No Excess) only if it is on your Schedule, up to AED 3,000 per accident unless the Schedule says otherwise.5
  • QIC lists a windscreen excess waiver up to AED 5,000 on its two Prestige Plus plans, and none on third party only.6
  • RAK Insurance takes no deductible on its Full Option plan where the windscreen is the only damage.7

All four insurers are on the Central Bank’s September 2026 register.8 Check your Schedule for a windscreen line.

Can your insurer set a higher excess than these limits?

The rules do not settle this. An outside agreement that reduces your cover is void, and the standard forms may be changed only in your favour.2,1 Neither text says whether an insurer can agree a higher excess by rider. If your Schedule shows more than Table 1, ask your insurer why.

The small print
  • Terms. The policy says “deductible”, the market says “excess”. The Basic Deductible is the Schedule 3 amount, set per accident. An Ancillary Deductible is any amount added to it.2
  • Table 1. This is Schedule 3 of the unified Loss and Damage policy, version consolidated 18 January 2021. The row for value over AED 250,000 has no upper limit, which is why a car over AED 500,000 fits two rows.2
  • English and Arabic, Schedule 3. The Arabic has the car overlap but not the truck overlap. Its AED 1,700 row covers trucks not exceeding 3 tons, so only the AED 4,500 row covers trucks over 3 tons (our translation). Where the English of that row says rental vehicles, the Arabic uses the word the English gives as taxi in Schedules 1 and 2.9
  • “Unknown person”. The Arabic says accidents recorded against an unknown person (our translation).9
  • Extra percentages. These sit in Chapter Three paras 7 to 9. The published English of para 7 reads “the Insured may charge the Insured”.2 The Arabic says the insurer may charge the insured (our translation).9 Para 9 names percentages only.
  • Windscreens. Third Party Schedule 4 lists glass, on depreciation only.3 GIG Gulf is Gulf Insurance Group (Gulf) B.S.C Closed on the register.8 Sukoon is Sukoon Insurance PJSC, and its waiver is additional benefit 3.9.5
  • Changes to the forms. Chapter One para 03 voids an external agreement that reduces the cover.2 Decision 25 of 2016 says the forms may be amended only in favour of the insured or beneficiary.1
  • 2027. From 1 January 2027, Art 102(5) of Cabinet Resolution 174 of 2026 bars an insurer from putting in a policy any term that reduces or prevents cover of its full civil liability for death, bodily injury or property damage (our translation).10 That line concerns liability to others. Ask your insurer whether it changes these terms.
