How far an electric car goes in the UAE heat and around the world
A car rated at 517 km is estimated to manage 592 km in Dubai in December and 471 km in August. Modelled range for all seven emirates and 92 cities from daily temperatures, 2021 to 2025, with current UAE figures for EV sales and charging.
Every range below is a modelled estimate from daily temperatures and a published curve, not a road test.1 The 92 cities are the two most populated in each of the 38 OECD members,2 plus 16 in the Gulf, on temperatures for 2021 to 2025.3
Dubai’s estimate moves by 121 km between December and August
Dubai’s estimate is 592 km in December and 471 km in August for a car rated at 517 km, a fall of 20%. That is 114.6% and 91.2% of rated range. Dubai’s mean temperature is 21.9°C in December and 36.1°C in August.3

Four months sit below rated range in Dubai, June to September. The August figure stayed between 90.2% and 92.0% in each year from 2021 to 2025. Abu Dhabi follows the same shape, with a low of 92.7% in August.
The estimate uses the daily mean, which includes the night. Dubai’s mean daily maximum in August is 42.9°C. At the daily maximum the same curve gives 72.0%, or 372 km. That is a stress case for a car driven only at the hottest hour.
Geotab’s percentile curves put the spread between trips at the same temperature far wider than the seasons. Dubai’s August estimate runs from 305 km at the 10th percentile to 632 km at the 90th.1
For a different car, apply the percentage to its rating. The IEA puts the average battery electric car range at almost 380 km,4 and 91.2% of 380 km is 347 km. Baseline: 2026 Tesla Model 3 Standard RWD, EPA 321 miles.5 That is a US rating, not a UAE specification.

Fifteen of 16 Gulf cities drop below rated range in their hottest months
Kuwait City has the lowest Gulf estimate, 84.4% or 436 km in July. In the UAE, the low months run from 465 km in Al Ain to 490 km in Umm Al Quwain. Jeddah sits at 99.9% in August, and Salalah’s lowest month, May, stays at 108.0%.

UAE cities spend 101 to 135 days a year below rated range because of heat, on this model. The highest OECD city, Athens, has 3 days.
Al Ain has 133 days at that maximum.
Cold still costs more than heat on this curve. Montréal’s January estimate is 62.3%, or 322 km, and Oslo’s is 70.4%, or 364 km. The median lowest month across the 76 OECD cities is 84.9%. Dubai’s is 91.2%.
Every emirate starts December within 3 km, and summer splits them by 25 km
For a car rated at 517 km, the eight UAE cities in this study sit at 590 to 593 km in December. The lowest months run from 465 km in Al Ain to 490 km in Umm Al Quwain. Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah hit their low in June, two months before Abu Dhabi and Dubai.31

An annual mean puts Kuwait City 14th and daily data puts it 45th
Applying the curve once to Dubai’s annual mean gives 109.5%, against 105.2% from daily temperatures and 91.2% in August.
The two widest gaps in the study are in the Gulf. Kuwait City falls 9.1 points, from 14th to 45th of 92. Riyadh falls 8.4 points, from 10th to 41st. Dubai moves from 34th to 35th.
On the daily method the top of the table is Cali, San José and Limón, at 113.8% to 114.7%. Salalah is fourth. Sydney is 6th, Los Angeles 10th and Athens 16th. Reykjavík and Kópavogur are last at 88.4%. Among UAE cities, Umm Al Quwain ranks highest at 23rd and Al Ain lowest at 40th.

A Kuwait driving study and Geotab’s fleet curve are 3 points apart at 35°C and 8 at 40°C
Geotab does not state how many of those trips took place in climates like the Gulf.
The closest Gulf evidence is a peer-reviewed study of more than 3,000 journeys by one 2019 Chevrolet Bolt in Kuwait. It models range 15% lower at a 35°C start, 22% lower at 40°C and 32% lower at 50°C.6 Applied to Dubai’s August days, that model gives 83.6% of best-case range. Geotab’s curve gives 79.3% of its peak.

Other sources report smaller losses. AAA’s 2026 dynamometer test of three EVs found 8.5% less range at 95°F (35°C) than at 75°F.7 Argonne’s tests, reported by the US Department of Energy, found 14% less at 95°F than at 72°F.8 Recurrent reports 5% at 90°F and 17% to 18% above 100°F from 29,716 cars. A table on the same page shows 85% to 87% of range at 100°F.9 A Dubai August loss under the lower sources would be smaller than this study’s estimate. Electric cars reached one quarter of global sales in 2025
The IEA reports sales up 20% to over 20 million in 2025, 25% of new cars.4 Its chart splits 2025 into 13.2 million in China, 4.2 million in Europe, 1.5 million in the United States and 2 million elsewhere.10

Even with no new policy, the IEA projects the global EV fleet growing more than sixfold from 2025 to as many as 510 million by 2035, not counting two- and three-wheelers.11
Forecasts for 2026 moved during the year. In May the IEA forecast 23 million, 28% of car sales.11 In July it expected 29%, with sales up around 10%.12 First-half figures conflict. The IEA says first-half 2026 electric car sales were slightly below 2025.12 PwC Autofacts says global EV sales rose 9%.13 The two figures are kept side by side.
Two 2025 estimates put the UAE at about 9% and 10% of new car sales
The IEA chart puts the UAE at about 10% of new car sales in 2025, from about 0% in 2020.14 Norway is at 97% and the European Union at 27% on the same chart.

The IEA puts Middle East electric car sales at around 75,000 in 2025, with the UAE at almost 50%, down from over 60% in 2023. BYD holds about 60% of the regional market and Tesla about 15%.4
Abu Dhabi Mobility counts 66,288 electric vehicles across the emirates
That count is dated 1 August 2025.19 It does not reconcile with every other figure, and the definitions differ or are not stated.

Abu Dhabi Mobility’s two lines total 141,120, below the 147,000 Rest of World reported for an earlier date.15 The Abu Dhabi Media Office wording describes Q1 2025 registrations of more than 15,000,20 close to the 16,373 stock Abu Dhabi Mobility gives for August. The wording does not say whether that is a running total or a quarterly figure. DEWA’s definition of an EV is not stated.21
Dubai’s reported charging points nearly quadrupled in 18 months
Reported points went from 740 in March 2025 to over 1,270 in August 2025,22 more than 1,860 by mid-January 2026,21 and 2,826 at the end of the third quarter of 2026.23 The scope widened to take in licensed independent operators, so the growth is not like for like.

National figures conflict with that count. Arthur D. Little’s report, via WAM in September 2026, gives approximately 2,800 charging points for the whole UAE, with around 1,250 DC points.17 DEWA’s 2,826 is for Dubai alone, and Abu Dhabi Mobility lists more than 1,200 public plugs in its emirate.19
Dividing DEWA’s 47,944 EVs by more than 1,860 points gives about 26 EVs per point in Dubai at the turn of 2026, our calculation. Abu Dhabi plans 5,500 charging points by 2027, 13,000 by 2030 and 75,300 by 2040.19 UAEV, the national operator, is expected to have 1,000 public stations by the end of 2030.15
