UAE traffic fines, black points and impound rules as of November 2026

When a fine appears on your record

Nothing you tick here is saved or sent.

Figures are as of 6 November 2026. For discounts, see traffic fine discounts by emirate.

Is there a discount on your fine right now?

Dubai Police publishes no fine discount,1 and its Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Operations said in March 2026 that the discounts were stopped.2 Abu Dhabi and Sharjah take 35% off within 60 days and 25% after that up to a year, not for serious violations.3,4 Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah run short campaigns only, the last reported ones around National Day.5 Which fines qualify, how to claim and how to spot a fake offer are on the traffic fine discounts guide.

Ministerial Resolution 178 of 2017 is the schedule the UAE portal lists now

Federal Decree-Law 14 of 2024 took effect on 29 March 2025. Article 45 says violations and administrative penalties are to be set by a Cabinet resolution.6 No such resolution appeared in the portal’s related legislation at 6 November 2026. That list shows Ministerial Resolution 130 of 1997, Cabinet Resolution 30 of 2017 and Cabinet Resolution 174 of 2026, plus one unrelated item.7 Article 49(2) keeps earlier resolutions in force, where they do not conflict with the Decree-Law, until replaced.6

Ministerial Resolution 178 of 2017 holds the fine and black point schedule. It was issued on 15 March 2017. The portal gives an effective date of 15 May 2017, while Article 17 says three months after issue. The portal state is Active. The portal lists 3 amendments, one each in 2019, 2020 and 2023, and a last update of 2 May 2023.8 u.ae, updated 1 October 2026, says the UAE also applies it and links a list of offences.9

That list is an undated PDF.10 It differs from the Arabic schedule in the portal’s download of the Resolution.11 The download has items 115 to 117, which the PDF does not, and a different item 54, shown in Table 2.

Cabinet Resolution 174 of 2026 takes effect on 1 January 2027

The text is Arabic only on the portal and the wording below is our translation.12

Speeding fines run from AED 300 to AED 3,000

Points and impound start once the excess passes 50km/h.10

Each emirate’s licensing authority sets speed limits and radar locations.13

From 1 January 2027, Article 14 of Resolution 174 has the licensing and traffic control authorities set limits and enforcement speeds in coordination, and says speeding fines are calculated from the speeds on road signs.12

Item 54 is AED 3,000, 6 points and 30 days in the portal’s Arabic schedule, and AED 1,000 and 6 points in the PDF.11 Emirates 24|7 reports that the Ministry of Interior announced the AED 3,000 fine in 2019.14 UAE Inform lists AED 1,000.15

Item 51 covers the driver and passengers. The Arabic schedule shows two cells for it, 4 points and none, and the PDF shows 4 with a stray dash on the next line. UAE Inform reports Ajman Police’s table as AED 400 and no points for a passenger.15 Whether a passenger’s belt carries points is UNKNOWN.

Items 49 and 50 show AED 400 and no points in the schedule. Sharjah Police’s FAQ gives AED 400 and 4 points for a child under 10 in the front seat, item 49.16 Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre’s child safety guide gives AED 400 and 4 points for a child under 4 without a child seat, item 50.17 Whether either carries points is UNKNOWN.

Dubai Police’s own table shows the same values for items 1 and 2. It also shows driving without number plates at AED 3,000, 23 points and 90 days.18

MOI accident records for 2024 show 4,898 accidents. Recorded causes include sudden swerving 856, distraction 783 and not leaving enough distance 700.19 Data period 2024. Checked 4 November 2026. These are accident records, not fines or claims. Schedule items with similar wording are 29, 32 and 52. The full data is in the UAE traffic statistics study.

What do tailgating, indicators, noise and loud music cost?

  • Tailgating. AED 400 and 4 points, item 52. Dubai can add 30 days impound. Dubai Police moved from warning messages to fines by radar in March 2025.20 Six tailgating fines in a year reach the 24-point limit.
  • Indicators. AED 400 and no points, item 83. Item 88, a broken lane-change light, is AED 400 and 2 points.10
  • Noisy car. AED 2,000 and 12 points, item 20. In the first nine months of 2026 Dubai Police recorded 2,045 noise violations and impounded 333 vehicles, plus 5,690 engine or chassis modification violations and 1,297 impounds.21 Dubai radars measure noise and its source.20 In Dubai a modification that raises noise or speed is a mandatory impound with an AED 10,000 release amount.22
  • Loud music or horn. AED 400 and 4 points, item 105. Item 105 also covers driving that endangers others in residential areas or near schools and hospitals.10 Dubai’s Quiet Roads campaign recorded 230 horn or audio violations by April 2026.23
  • Carrying paying passengers. Item 76 alone is 24 points, which is the limit.10

Dubai’s extra impound comes from a resolution of the Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, issued on 10 September 2024.24 Release needs fines on the traffic file settled and the violation fixed, and police can approve AED 100 a day for a light vehicle in place of the remaining days.22

Table 3.Dubai discretionary impound, Administrative Resolution 1 of 2024. These periods apply in Dubai only.
ImpoundCases
30 daysSudden swerving that endangers others, not keeping a safe distance, distraction by a phone or other object, a heavy vehicle leaving mandatory routes
14 daysEntering a road without checking, dangerous reversing, lane discipline in a light vehicle, stopping in the middle of the road, dangerous overtaking, a vehicle failing safety requirements, stopping or overtaking on the hard shoulder, no number plates or only one, obstructing traffic, changing the colour without permission

Dangerous reversing is item 30 in the federal schedule, AED 500 and 4 points, and Dubai can add the 14 days above. Abu Dhabi Police’s warning of 9 October 2026 gave those figures, and AED 2,000, 23 points and 60 days impound where reversing endangers lives, property or traffic safety, which matches item 1.25

Road rules and limits are in the road rules and speed limits guide.

Some offences go to court under the Decree-Law

The schedule marks alcohol as decided by court. The Decree-Law sets these ranges.6

ArticleOffencePenalty
35(1)Driving under the influence of alcoholImprisonment and AED 20,000 to 100,000, or either. Licence suspended at least 3 months the first time, 6 months the second, cancelled the third
35(2)Driving under narcotic or psychotropic substancesImprisonment and AED 30,000 to 200,000, or either
36Driving during a licence suspensionUp to 3 months and at least AED 10,000, or either
37Driving with no licence or an unrecognised licenceSee the driving guide
38Not stopping after an accident with injuries, fleeing police, deliberate collision with traffic, military or security vehiclesArabic text: up to 1 year and AED 50,000 to 100,000, or either
39(1)Pedestrian crossing away from a designated place, causing an accidentImprisonment and AED 5,000 to 10,000, or either
39(2)Pedestrian crossing away from a designated place on a road with a limit of 80km/h or moreAt least 3 months and at least AED 10,000, or either

Article 38 differs between versions. The Arabic text says up to 1 year and AED 50,000 to 100,000.26 The English portal text says up to two years and gives the upper fine as “(AED 100.000) one million AED”.6 Licence offences are on the driving in the UAE guide.

Reaching 24 points suspends a licence for 3 months the first time

These Resolution 178 rules apply now. Whether they continue after 2026 is not stated.8

Table 5.Black point rules, Ministerial Resolution 178 of 2017, portal text of 2 May 2023. Translation ours.
ArticleRule
1Cumulative limit is 24 points within one calendar year from the first violation
2(3)Points count from the date the violation is recorded
2(4)Points are removed 12 months after the fine is paid
2(5)An approved training course before reaching the limit removes 8 points, once a year
3Reaching the limit: licence withheld and suspended 3 months the first time, 6 months the second, 1 year the third
3A training course waives the first suspension only. It is mandatory for the second and third
4Probationary or first licence: suspended 6 months, waived on a rehabilitation course. Reaching the limit again in the probation period cancels the licence, with no new test for 1 year

Sharjah Police’s FAQ words point removal differently: points that are one year old and have not reached the limit are erased.16 Its FAQ also gives 4 points for item 49, see the note under Table 2.

Points can also come off in campaigns. MOI’s Accident-Free Day offered 4 points off to drivers who took a pledge and committed no violation on 31 August 2026.27

Impound days can be bought out, up to a cap of AED 3,000 with the fine

Resolution 178 Article 7 lets an impound period be replaced by a training course or by payment of AED 100 a day for a light vehicle or AED 200 for a heavy vehicle. The fine plus this amount may not exceed AED 3,000 per violation, and the rest of the days are served. Article 6 excludes vehicles of the government and its companies and bodies. Under Article 8, a vehicle stopped on the road more than three months after its licence expired is impounded until restrictions are paid and the licence is renewed.8

Worked example, outside Dubai’s listed cases: item 73 is AED 1,000 and 30 days. The AED 3,000 cap leaves AED 2,000, which buys 20 days at AED 100. The other 10 days are served.

Dubai adds its own rules. Decree 30 of 2023 keeps AED 100 and AED 200 a day for Resolution 178 impounds not listed in the Decree, and sets release amounts for listed cases.22

Table 6.Dubai release amounts, Decree 30 of 2023, Articles 2 and 4.
Release amountCases
AED 100,000Road race without a police permit
AED 50,000Recreational motorcycle on a paved road, reckless driving, red light, fake or obscured plate, deliberately hitting a police vehicle, driver under 18
AED 10,000Modification raising speed or noise, escaping police, no plate, gathering or stunts, excess tint
Payment of the finesTraffic fines over AED 6,000 recorded on the vehicle

A repeat impound within one year doubles the AED 100,000, AED 50,000 or AED 10,000 amount, up to AED 200,000. An owner who leaves a car in the impound area after the period ends pays AED 50 a day.22

Abu Dhabi sets its own release amounts under Law 5 of 2020, applied from 9 September 2020. Abu Dhabi Police’s notice gives up to AED 50,000 for deliberately hitting or damaging a police patrol (plus the damage), road racing without a permit, fake, altered, obscured or misused plates, driving that endangers life or safety, and a red light, where the licence is also withdrawn for up to 6 months. It gives up to AED 10,000 for engine or chassis changes without a permit; up to AED 5,000 for more than 60 km/h over the limit, for causing an accident by speed, sudden swerving, not keeping a safe distance or not giving way to pedestrians, and for a child under 10 in the front seat; and AED 100 a violation in other impound cases. Fines on the vehicle above AED 7,000 are paid in full before release.28 Emarat Al Youm reported the same decision with the amounts as fixed figures.29

What does smart impound cost in each emirate?

Smart impound keeps the car at your home or another private location with a tracking device fitted, instead of in a yard.

What happens if you leave a car parked for months?

Dubai and Abu Dhabi both treat a neglected car in a public place as a violation. Before a long trip, Dubai Municipality advises cleaning the car, using a cover and parking in a designated area.34
